Criminal Investigations

Gaza & Hogan has a broad and deep range of experience representing clients in criminal investigations. When the United States Department of Justice is investigating a crime, the stakes are raised for everybody in the case. DOJ has enormous resources. The potential sentences in criminal cases are daunting, both in terms of prison and potential fines.

Whether a client is a witness, subject, target, or actual defendant in a federal criminal case, Gaza & Hogan is dedicated to protecting the client’s interests. As an initial matter, avoiding criminal charges is always the best option. In order to achieve this result, the firm must work diligently with the client to examine the details of the case, coordinate with other parties or entities, and communicate effectively with the government.  The potential outcomes include declination of all criminal charges, non-prosecution agreements, corporate integrity agreements, and/or monitoring options. The firm’s attorneys have successfully achieved complete declinations in multiple matters for both individual and corporate clients, and are experienced in all of the other options.

The firm also will occasionally represent defendants in local or state-level criminal cases. Generally, these are complex cases involving allegations of fraud, technical crash investigations, or homicide charges.

Where the government brings criminal charges, clients face an array of choices requiring top-level counsel. In some instances, a full-scale and vigorous trial defense is called for. In other cases, negotiating a plea, a deferred prosecution agreement, or some other compromise is the better course of action. Because of their unique experience, the firm’s attorneys have tried more jury trials than the largest national criminal defense law firms. In addition, because the firm’s attorneys have participated in the decision-making in cases from a top-level perspective for both the prosecution and defense, they have the experience and judgment to know which course of action is the best for each client. There are few lawyers who are outstanding trial advocates. There are even fewer lawyers who possess the experience to understand how a case will play out in the long run. Gaza & Hogan provides clients with counsel who can do both.
